Christmas Cards for Typhoon Yolanda Survivors

In 2013, typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) hit Tacloban, a province in the Philippines. More than 6,000 lives were taken and 90% of homes were destroyed leaving around 4.1 million people needing food and shelter.

Our illustration and editorial elective class created Christmas post cards for the purpose of raising funds for survivors from Tacloban. Every student created two Christmas cards depicting "The Spirit of Christmas" with the typhoon and survivors in mind.

I depicted this theme through the illustrations below showing how even amidst the loss and destruction, the spirit of Christmas can still be felt. This can be felt by the number of people willing to help the survivors through the gifts or relief goods. Even simply giving shelter from the rain with an umbrella can make it better. The smallest things can have a big impact, even something as small as a post card.
